تشكّل ترومسو المركز الإداري والتجاري والتعليمي لشمال النرويج، وهي سابع أضخم مدينة فيها من حيث الكثافة السكانية، كما أنها موطن لجامعة ومصنع مشروب وحديقة نباتية في أقصى شمال الكرة الأرضية. تقع البلدة على بعد ما يقارب 350 كم شمال الدائرة القطبية، لذا فهي تشهد كلّاً من النهار والليل القطبيّين، كما أنها أحد الأماكن المشهورة لتأمّل ظاهرة الشفق القطبي التي تعرف بـ "اورورا بورياليس". أمّا الكاتدرائية الجميلة، فهي واحدة من أكبر الكنائس الخشبية في النرويج، وتقع في منتصف البلدة في ساحة صغيرة، حيث توجد بجانبها بعض التماثيل والمنحوتات المثيرة للاهتمام. استمتع بالتنزّه مشياً على الأقدام في شارع ستروغاتا وتوجّه نحو السوق، حيث ستلاقي موسيقى مبهجة، وروائح فوّاحة منعشة من القهوة والخبز الطازج والفراولة. يقدّم متحف ترومسو معروضات عن الأعراق البشرية من الحضارات المستقلة التي سكنت منطقة لابلاند، ويجاوره المتحف القطبي بمعروضاته التي تروي حكاية المنطقة القطبية بينما يركّز على حياة الصيادين وناصبي الفخاخ والمستكشفين القدامى. أما الكاتدرائية القطبية، فهي في الحقيقة ليست كاتدرائية على الإطلاق، بل هي الكنيسة الأبرشية لإقليم ترومسويساند الذي يعد جزءاً من ترومسو، وقد تم بناؤها عام 1965 بشكلٍ أساسيٍّ من الإسمنت، كما تم تصميمها لتبدو كألواح الجليد، وتعد واحدة من أشهر المعالم في المدينة. ترومسو هي بلدة لطيفة، وغنيّة بما فيها، وحيوية بموقعها ذي المناظر الخلابة متربعةً على جزيرة، كما تزخر بما يفوق حاجتها من المطاعم والحانات والنوادي والمسارح، للترفيه عن السكان المحليين والسياح على حد سواء، مما يجعلها بحق العاصمة الحضارية لشمال النرويج.
